HIS Home 300
Just Taking a Break
On June 21-27, 2009, the Southern Route of the H.I.S. Home 300,
sponsored by Athens UMC, took 18 participants on a bike ride through Illinois, Indiana,
and Ohio to raise awareness and funds for the Haitian Interdenominational Shelter
in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. Combined with the Northern Route, total donations exceeded $42,500.
The H.I.S. Home 300 rides again June 20-26, 2010.
For ride details, call Athens UMC at 217-636-8844 and ask for Mary Grant.

Athens UMC sponsored the Southern Route of the H.I.S. Home 300,
6-day bicycle ride held June 21-27, 2009, to raise awareness and funds for
the Haitian Interdenominational Shelter (H.I.S. Home) for Children in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.
Fifteen cyclists pedaled 300 miles from Monticello, IL, to Harrod, OH, and raised
more than $15,200 for the basic needs and education of 126 abandoned and orphaned
children who live at H.I.S. Home.
Mark Grant, Mary Grant, and Jenifer Johnson, members of Athens UMC,
organized and led the new 2009 Southern Route. Together with the Northern Route,
led by Tony Scott of Grace UMC in Joliet, IL, the two groups of cyclists raised a combined
total of $42,520. The H.I.S. Home 300 is the largest source of funding for the orphanage
and will pay the annual rent on the two homes used by the children and staff at H.I.S. Home,
provide for desperately needed repairs, and help with food costs of $2,000 per week.
The cyclists stayed overnight in churches along the route in the communities of Monticello, IL,
Catlin, IL, Attica, IN, Tipton City, IN, Hartford City, IN, and St. Marys, OH.
Hal and Chris Nungester, founders of H.I.S. Home, and formerly of Harrod, OH, visited the
Southern Route team on Day Two of their three state journey. At many of the churches where
the cyclists stayed or stopped for lunch, they were able to share about the mission of H.I.S. Home.
A celebration and reunion of adoptive families in Harrod Park greeted the two groups of
cyclists on the last day of their bike ride. They rode under a banner painted by the children
at H.I.S. Home and presented their pledges in person to the Nungesters.
Athens UMC contributed to the great success of the H.I.S. Home 300 by providing donations
to pay for expenses, such as gasoline for the support vehicles and food for the cyclists.
They also collected and donated 2 cans of baby formula, 36 pairs of socks, 9 shirts,
9 bottles of vitamins, 34 pairs of flip-flops, and 68 pairs of underwear for HIS kids.
Sponsoring a bicycle ride allowed Athens UMC to contribute in a substantial way to an
overseas mission. The team assembled came from all over Illinois and two other states
and included high school youth, college age, and adults. Each cyclist chose three
H.I.S. Home children to pray for during the six days of cycling and tied their photos to
their bicycle handlebars. All participants cheerfully dealt with hot weather,
bicycle breakdowns, cold showers, detours, and sleeping on floors, to glorify God by loving and
providing for “the least of these.”
